Analysis

As the oil circulates around the machine, it collects the contaminants and worn particles present in the system, gathering valuable information.

Recognising the importance of a Used Oil Analysis programme for the trouble-free operation and reliability of equipment, in 2005 “Petrochem Group” established a modern laboratory in Baku in cooperation with “Castrol Offshore” and “Vernolab” (United Kingdom). Before that year, used-oil analysis samples were sent to BP’s laboratories in Dubai or the United Kingdom. This process significantly increased both turnaround time and costs. The advantages of a local laboratory are obvious: this initiative not only minimises turnaround time but also reduces the cost of urgently shipping samples to and from laboratories located in other countries. The laboratory also ensures that potential equipment failures are identified in time so that the necessary preventive measures can be taken, thereby reducing process downtime.

Regular and accurate analysis of used-oil samples helps to save money and improve safety by enabling:

  • Optimising the efficiency of lubricants
  • Extending the service life of machine and equipment parts
  • Minimising maintenance requirements
  • Identifying and eliminating potential problems before they occur
  • Significantly reducing the risk of mechanism breakdowns, thereby minimising costs

To improve the efficiency of the entire sampling process and to reduce the number of human errors by eliminating any shortcomings that may occur during the process, “Petrochem” has created additional services within its oil-sampling programme. The main elements of this service are:

  • Selection of a used-oil testing programme tailored to a specific lubricant and its application. Sample bottles are imported from the United Kingdom, and used-oil samples are transported to and from offshore installations in special, certified Marine Transit Containers.
  • Supply of all necessary sampling devices as well as pre-printed labels for the sample bottles.
  • The customer receives a detailed Laboratory Analysis Report together with a Summary Report setting out the proposed preventive measures to address any detected problems at the earliest stage.

Analytical Ferrography — Predictive Analysis

Ferrography is a powerful diagnostic tool used to monitor the overall condition of the machine rather than just the condition of the lubricant. By studying the particles separated from used lubricant samples, we offer this service to assess machine wear. The predictive analysis method makes it possible to:

  • Determine which components are under stress
  • Plan future repair programmes
  • Take measures to prevent possible accidents and minimise the risk of catastrophic failure and secondary damage
  • Improve safety
